Education leaders must be engaged in the development of dramatic changes that are happening all around us due to the inventions and the adoption of new technologies. These inventions are happening at the exponential speed that make disruptions as the new normal. The fusions of physical, digital, and biological worlds are redefining what it means for us to be human. These new technologies also redefine the field of education and what learning means. Education leaders need to be engaged in the effort for rethinking, re imagining, and redesigning teaching and learning.
In this presentation I will use the philosophy of Ki Hajar Dewantara, the father of Indonesian education, as a guiding framework in how education leaders can approach educational change. Ki Hajar’s philosophy for educational change is centered around three main concepts: continuity, convergence, and concentric, or is usually called “Trikon.” For Ki Hajar, change is to be embraced from time to time because it is the nature of human and cultural development.
In Ki Hajar’s philosophy, education is an important part of human culture/civilization. Education should be designed aligned with the vision about what kind of civilization we want to create. Thus, the discussion about educational transformation among education leaders should also include conversations about rethinking, re imagining, and redesigning our society as the impact about the development of the new technologies. Education leaders need to ask the question about what our common purpose is and what our shared dreams are for Indonesia and for the global society.
